Re: Black Stonefly Nymphs
We USED TO have a mega hatch of pteronarcys dorsata on the Lackawaxen, from the Jack-Austin run to the pines above Charlie’s store........ emergence took place after dusk: in the morning the side of the shop would be covered with shucks 2 1/2 to 3 inches long from these giants. Ivans large CYB nymph was the ticket......... I haven’t seen any of these on that river in the last 15 years
Pictured below is the last one I have from Ivan - he tied and gave this to me in 1986.
7957BX, size 4-6-8
4 layers of .015 lead on the shank
Spun mole and baby seal body
Fine gold wire rib
Turkey shellback
XL CYB hackle, tail and legs.
Who knows maybe some will be hatching this weekend. April 14- 28 was the emergence date.......

Re: Black Stonefly Nymphs
Dana - I’d very much like to meet Ivan at some point. I’m a huge fan of his patterns.
Do you know what caused the decrease in this species? Was it a reduction in water quality (pollution), or something else?

Re: Black Stonefly Nymphs
We have a large population of Quill Gordon‘s, and other species which are sensitive to water quality. For whatever reason this particular stonefly is scarce.
Anytime you want to make a trip down, let me know when I’ll see if I can put something together. He is a wealth of information on all fronts.......I’ve never seen anybody tie flies or fish like this guy does.
Bob-My sincerest apologies about the thread Hi-Jack , large black stoneflies get me wound up
Dana
PS - Ray, Now that I think about it you picked that exact fly out of my “Ivan trophy box” and looked at it closely last time we were together on the Beaverkill.......I think you remember the box I’m talking about: the large two sided one with curved clear plastic dome covers..
