Sanchez One Feather Wet Fly SBS
Took about as long to type the title as it did to tie the fly; nice and simple.
hook - Dai Riki 320 #12
thread - Danville 6/0 brown
rib - Krystal Flash pearl
abdomen/thorax - dubbing hare's ear
wing/hackle - hen mottled brown
mash barb, start thread; tie in KF and wrap to bend
dub thread/dub abdomen
counterwrap rib; tie off/trim
prep feather
measure (tip a bit past bend) and tie in
dub thorax
stroke hackle fibers back
wrap hackle, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN
Regards,
Scott
Re: Sanchez One-Feather Wet Fly SBS
It hollers, "Caddis!", yet likely whispers a whole bunch of other things, too. I'd be happy to have it in a one-fly contest.

Nice. I don't know who Sanchez is but I've tied a bunch of these in small sizes. The holo rib is great on this one.

Scott Sanchez. Used to work at Jack Dennis' shop in Jackson, WY; now the manager at High Country Flies. He's written a lot of articles for American Angler and a great book, A New Generation of Trout Flies; inventor of the Double Bunny streamer.

Scott

Re: Sanchez One Feather Wet Fly SBS
Scott - I tye a similar style pattern which was based on the "Henwing Emerger" (also known as March Brown Henwing Emerger/Pages 85 & 234/Hatch Guide for New England Streams by Thomas Ames Jr.). The original style was created by a gentleman named George Schlotter, who ran the Anglers Nook on Rt. 313 in Shushan NY. There was a magazine article about the henwing emerger style in the 2006 edition of "Flyfishing & Tying Journal" (Spring 2006 Edition/Pages 62 thru 64). The original article was called "Curious George", written by Thomas Ames Jr. There was a very interesting comment about how Mr. Ames fishes the henwing style fly.
He writes:
"When the late afternoon hatch begins, I tie on one of George Schlotter's Henwing Emergers. By smearing floatant on the wing only, I can hang it in the surface film just like the clumsy natural, laboring to shed its shuck. Bigger fish often ignore the more exposed, high floating duns in favor of slightly submerged emergers."
I need to remember this when I get to fish these flies. I like the idea of fishing the fly as an emerger. A really wonderful article, which has stuck in my head even after a few years. I wish I could find that magazine article again. I'd post a copy of it for reference.
Here is the bastardized version I tye:
Lime Henwing & Herl
Hook - Daiichi 1510/Size 8
Thread - Pearsall's Silk (Green)
Hackle - American Specked Hen Back (Caddis Green)
Rib - Fine Copper Wire
Body - Peacock Herl
Tail - Hen Hackle Fibers (same as hackle)
The Dette Fly Shop sells cool isonychia and hendricson variations of hen wing flies:
A March Brown version of the Hen Wing fly is listed in "Trout Flies for the 21st Century: 200 Essential Patterns that Catch Fish" By Dick Talleur

Ray,
Thanks you for the great pics, recipes and history. Some more patterns I can add to the flybox.
Have a Happy New Year,
Scott

This style of tying a wing and a hackle with one feather reminds me of the Glanrhos style of tying.

Ruard,
That is a very cool fly; like the One Feather in reverse. I've tried tying a few but haven't been happy with my results, yet (like getting to Carnegie Hall - practice, practice, practice). Thanks for the link.

Scott
