Found the original (Ode To the Mountain Quail) on the FlytyingForum; swapped partridge for quail and bleached pheasant for turkey tail fibers.


hook - Dai Riki 280 #16
thread - MFC 8/0 sand
tag/rib - Krystal Flash pearl
tail - partridge
abdomen - pheasant tail bleached
thorax - dubbing
hackle - partridge aftershaft
collar - partridge


mash barb, start thread, tie in KF and wrap back to point above point




wrap KF down the bend and back; tie off, leave the tag for ribbing




measure (gap width past bend) some partridge fibers; tie in/trim






tie in some pheasant tail fibers; wrap forward, tie off/trim






wrap rib forward; tie off/trim






dub thread/dub thorax






prep aftershaft




untwist/split thread, insert aftershaft, spin








moisten, stroke fibers back while wrapping; tie off








prep partridge feather; tie in by tip






wrap partridge; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Scott - This may be your best tutorial yet, and that is intended as high praise. The thing that strikes me most about this pattern is how fishable it is. Yes, it is a gorgeous fly, but to me it looks like a fly just begging to be fished. Really admirable combination.

Scott, another very interesting combination of materials and an excellent SBS. You've employed a number of things here that I've not fooled with or very little. There is some real potential here for exploring. Ray's right, this would be a stellar pattern, drifting high in the column and lively as hell.

Excellent SBS for a truly wonderful pattern. Just the right amount of glitz and plenty of our favorite soft ingredients too! The tutorial looks so easy, even a duffer like me could do it! Your skills are excellent and your patterns seem like fish candy! I can only imagine my local warm water denizens going ga-ga over this one!
