Easternized Nemes Green Drake
Still hopeful that our time in Roscoe will coincide with a Green Drake hatch, I have taken the liberty of poaching Sylvester Nemes' Green Drake Soft Hackle pattern and "easternized" it by making the body more yellow than was his version. Nemes' premise was that the extra hackle volume, especially with the stiffer cock hackle propping it up, would help keep this larger fly near the top of the water column.
Hook: Mustad 3906B, Size #10
Thread: Uni 8/0, Camel
Hackles: Two dyed olive partridge neck feathers over a gold-tipped badger cock hackle
Tail: Three moose body hairs
Rib: Dull finish gold wire
Body: Blend of European hare dyed olive (thinks to Ruard) and Hareline Dubbin Antique Gold #28

I need that pattern for the Roaring Fork here in Colorado.... I am being a tightwad, and will not buy a dyed olive partridge skin.... You make it hard not to buy one Bill!
My word that's an awesome pattern!

Koolade? Or some kind of food colouring and have a go dying a few feathers for your own use rather than buy the whole pre-dyed skin?DUBBN wrote:I need that pattern for the Roaring Fork here in Colorado.... Nice looking tie (and fly)
Re: Easternized Nemes Green Drake
Beautiful fly. Wayne, you could get an olive permanent marker and dye up a few feathers.

I did..... You will never see a picture of them. Terrible looking patterns. I was so embarrassed with the end product I tied up a couple San Juan Worms just to feel clean again.JohnP wrote:Beautiful fly. Wayne, you could get an olive permanent marker and dye up a few feathers.

Very cool--one of my (many ) obsessions lately has been been how different materials interact "structurally" in current--definitely looking forward to a fishing report, though you might have trouble convincing yourself the trout didn't take it as a cicada.Nemes' premise was that the extra hackle volume, especially with the stiffer cock hackle propping it up, would help keep this larger fly near the top of the water column.

Lovely fly. The hungry fish will be wanting to grab a hold of this one!
