"Soft-Hackled Fly Imitations", by Sylvester Nemes

Post by letumgo » Sat Apr 16, 2011 8:38 pm

I spent today reading Mr. Nemes self published book entitled "Soft-Hackled Fly Imitations". Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Having read it, I think this is my new favorite of his books. He goes thru twenty different soft-hackle patterns he created for specific hatches, along with descriptions of how he and other fishermen tested each of the patterns to gage their success. The books has a lot of practical advice on fishing techniques (how to fish the flies, what leaders to use, how to set the hook without snapping off the fish, and how to create your own custom patterns for your local hatch).

All in all, it was a terrific way to spend a lazy Saturday. I highly recommend this book to any of you, who have not already read it.

(Ruard - You were right, I loved this book.)

Why weren't you out fishing?

Best,

The streams are blown out by the rain. Perhaps I can get out later this week...

Ray,

Thanks for the heads up on this. I hit Abe Books and placed an order from a store right down the road from my house. Unfortunately, I'm still in Idaho Falls and a long way from home so an on-line order was the way to go.

This book is by far his best work based on what I've read. It straddles the line nicely between exact species imitation and the practicalities of tying soft-hackles. It is also the first which looks at design in a non-superficial way.

For traditional Soft Hackle Folks that was the "permission Granted" to stray into imitative tying

I bought mine from Amazon's used book section. It is a signed edition, which is cool.
