In the article it says he used maple sugar RIT dye but I think he may have meant maple brown sugar.

He dyed the teal flank feathers maple brown sugar.

I'll take some good photos of both the flank he dyed and the dubbing blends and post them for you guys to see. Sorry I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate the forum and didn't see this. I became pretty obsessed with Mr. Bird early on. I've read the article about that says he used maple brown sugar RIT dye but I was told by someone who was close to him this wasn't true and that he actually used "carpet dye" that he also blended himself. Whatever "carpet dye" is I'm not really sure. Just adds to the mystery I suppose. Who really knows...

Since carpets are most often made from wool or nylon; acid dyes would be the likely choice to dye them. Here is a maple sugar acid dye:
