Re: BWO
I like the idea of using Mole as a thorax. I will incorporate that in to some of my BWO's.
Re: BWO
Beautiful fly. I wonder why such a dark fly works for Baetis nymphs/emergers?
Re: BWO
Here is my emerger version tied with Rust Brown thread, an olive Rabbit/Hare dubbing blend with trilobal bling, and Natural Dark Dun Whiting Hen hackle...

Bad camera or not, it looks amazing. Thank you for sharing the recipe with us because I plan on stealing this pattern
and using it for the creeks I fish.

Yup, I stole it, too.

Not sure why a darker color works but the BWOs where I fish are dark in color. This is another pattern that I use when the BWOs are hatching. I use orange silk and heavily, heavily wax it and it comes pretty close to the color.
Hook: Dohiku 302 #16
Body: Heavily waxed orange silk
Thorax: Natural mole fur
Wing: Partridge

Re: BWO
I am surprised at how big of hooks you folks use for BWO's.
As far as color goes or shade. It varies for me from river system to river system

Re: BWO
I use a lot of #16 hooks and just tie the fly proportionally smaller, so that it looks like a #18. Are you using #18 and #20 hooks?
Re: BWO
I do use size 18 and 20 hooks. I feel I get more hook ups going smaller. I should try tying the same size bugs on larger hooks, just to see.newriverspey wrote: ↑Thu Dec 23, 2021 2:41 pm I use a lot of #16 hooks and just tie the fly proportionally smaller, so that it looks like a #18. Re: BWO
I do tie on 18's and 20's and perhaps need to go back and try tying on them, see if I get more hook-ups
