I would believe the term is Seizing, as is done when joining some rope or cable.
Well waxed thread was wrapped. Here's a simple example using a thick chunk
of rope. Principal is the same just finer materials to be used.

Yes, and it's easy to understand that if you don't have it, you would do better taking up knitting. Once you've seen it, there is no going back. But it must be the original 6B.

Speaking of color matches, the not-so-famous color No.32 (Classic Chestnut) is a pretty good match when wet to the elusive color No.6B (Sherry Spinner).

Holy smokes, Phil-nice bit of sleuthing you’ve done there.
FWIW, I use number 32 Chestnut and I wax it with my homemade pine/beeswax mix, and it looks almost identical to 6B..... Same as your wet sample but a tad darker.
What what I have to do at work all day, if we didn’t have these very important topics to render ???
