Catgut for bodies

Post by ronr » Mon Jan 20, 2020 8:35 pm

A friend is using medical catgut for nymph bodies... usually caddis pupa patterns... anyone had any experience with this stuff?

For some it can be tough to get. Sometimes it's tough to get the correct size. I started using Bug Gut. Makes some amazing Caddis patterns. Very versatile. Same color.

No but it sounds kind of like using condoms to tie World Champion flyfisher Vladi Trzebunia's worm for Polish Nymphing. ;)

I tied up a handful a few years back and used them successfully down in NH on the Isinglass in mid-winter. The water was cold and shelf ice was a problem but three Rainbows were caught on Vladi worms. Dave Klausmeyer told me the Salmon up here in northern Maine just love them... I have to disagree, the only thing I've ever caught here on Vladi worms are Chub.

Funny how, what’s old is new: in the early 1980’s using condom “material” for scuds, cress bugs, and caddis larvae was all the rage...a decade or so later, It becomes the soup de jour for Polish nymphing. Now, precut strips are sold for big $$$$ as the latest must have item.

I am sure, well before my time in the 40’s, this same material was successfully used by the generations prior!

Unlike latex condoms, the bug gut will last years on a pattern. The Condom flies would start to degrade immediately.

By the way, there are some CAT guts in different colors. I have seen it in light Blue and light Yellow. I would search medical supplies online. Or talk to your veterinarian.
