Kimono/Pearsall coordinated numbers

Just some numbers I've worked out for Kimono and Pearsall's. There are also some other colors of Kimono that I really like that are not available in Pearsall's. I started tying with the Kimono when Pearsall's fell. I really like it. It is smaller in diameter to Pearsall's which is great for those #16-#20's. Mind you, my normal tying thread is Griffith's 14/0 so this feels very comfortable to me. I've had no breakage issues with the Kimono silk. It has some great colors that are damn close to Pearsall's. It's hard to photograph and compare side by side because the diameter difference does effect the photography. the biggest downside to the Kimono is the large spools. They won't fit a standard bobbin holder you will need to manipulate a large bobbin holder to make them fit. Anyway this may save some time if you want to try some.

Thanks Bill, I use a Norvise mostly for tying at home so I'm respooling it onto those bobbins anyway.

I have made a lot of dubbing strands with it on a block. No difference at all. I prefer it now for smaller fly sizes. Plus when using a block to make dubbing ropes any slight color difference is really negated since most of it is covered by dubbing.

Some of the Kimono colors appear to be very close to YLI colors.

For example, Kimono #330 looks to be on my PC display an exact match to YLI #244.

John, I have some of the YLI 330. Its very close. The YLI might be just a bit darker but it is hard to tell even with the naked eye on the spool because the fine diameter sits tighter and the sheen is more distinct.

This has to be very true. Also, when subsurface, that small difference should be minor too. At least to a human eye. Good work, Carl. How big is the difference between Pearsall's no 5 Yellow and closest Kimono? I prefer well waxed no 5 to well waxed no 3.

I really like the idea of the smaller diameter Kimono; I'm spending a lot more time tying small and it's difficult for me not to over proportion my bodies with other silks at times. I don't have any to compare Stephan. Looking at the two color charts I have (and I have gotten better at comparing on the charts since I have the real thing of many of the colors) I would say that the Kimono 302 Origami would probably be the best match. I have some Pearsall's yellow here at home but I don't know if I have #4 or #5. I don't have both.
