One of my more unusual Christmas gifts this year came from my nephew. He gave me a jar of fur from his Polish Tatra Sheepdog. If you've never seen one of these dogs, I encourage you to look them up. They are an absolutely beautiful breed of dog.
Their body hair is long and very fine (soft) and along the back and tail it is around 5 of 6 inches in length. (perfect streamer hair )

Thanks Bill. My nephew and I are looking forward to catching fish with these later this year. I thought it was a way of bringing things full circle (boy takes dog fishing, boy catches fish with fur from dog).
I had told him that some people use dog fur in fishing flies, so he started saving up the fur for me when he brushes his dog. Now I need to see what I can create with the fur.

There is a New Zealand streamer called the “Hairy Dog”. A long time ago a lodge owner had an English Cocker Spaniel and someone had the idea of snipping off some of its fur and making a fly with it. It became so successful that the dog started took like it had mange and anyone with scissors approaching the poor thing would make it go and hide under the porch.....

Ray, that’s a classic in the making. Let ‘em shed! What a cool gift.
Also, that’s dead ringer for a caddis pupa I see in the fall in northern PA on Kettle. Don’t lose them all.

Thanks for the comments guys. The stories brought a smile to my face. Perhaps I should have named this one a "Puppy Puppa".
William - Nice seeing you drop in again. You've been missed, buddy.

Re: PTSd Nymph (Polish Tatra Sheepdog)
Ray - my yellow lab Rosie used to make that same expression your nephews dog has on his face, After sniffing a fish. My son calls it the fish “buffle”..... And she would eat the whole fish like they were nothing!! She would eat a 14 inch trout, or a mackerel in one gulp: Head bones, skin, guts, all in one bite.
I called the vet to make sure it wouldn’t kill her, and he told me it’s actually good for them. Dogs and cats were made to eat animals whole. There’s a big difference between a farm vet, and a city vet!
PS, She lived over 18 years.

Jim - Yes. The Tatra sheepdog are very nice dogs. They are really energetic, without being troublesome. Nice gentle and naturally social animals. This was the first one I'd met, and he palled around with us fishing all afternoon. I can't wait to fish with the flies caught with his fur.
Dana - I smiled when I read your post. {gulp - thanks for the image}
