Hamilton's Real Skunk variant

Post by ronr » Mon Mar 11, 2019 6:10 pm

Dave Hamilton of Grants Pass, OR demonstrated his Real Skunk at the FFI show in Albany, Or a few years ago. I rushed home, tied some up and proceeded to enjoy the results. I hadn't tied that fly in a while and decided I'd try to do the soft hackle/flymph/nymph version with my fixation on adding glass beads to soft hackles. Not sure where my variation fits in.

Its tied on TMC 3761 sz.14, has a small, silver lined emerald glass bead, a few wraps of lead free wire behind the bead. The tail is skunk guard hair, rib is small copper wire, abdomen is skunk underfur dubbed.
A couple wraps of peacock herl forms a small thorax, and a black CDC feather for the hackle. I'm sure a good starling feather would do nicely as well.

I'd fish this fly as the point fly on two or three fly cast this time of year. The ice is melting on the Crooked this week and this fly will find the water this weekend.

Should be a great winter stone for the Crooked or Middle D. Try a red bead too.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.
