I was fortunate to find and purchase some old Pearsall's Gossamer silk thread on wooden spools at a local show recently, including some colors that are now relatively difficult to obtain. One of these was a spool of #5 Yellow that is noticeably brighter than some newer #5 on a plastic spool that I obtained some time ago. It begged to be used, so I came up with the following:
Hook: Daiichi 1640, Size #12
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer, vintage #5 Yellow
Hackle: Male wood duck upper covert
Body: Thread wraps

Wow, that is beautiful Bill. Delicate perfection. Not a single wrap or fiber out of place.
You set the bar...

Very nice!
I'm fond of duck coverts for soft hackles, and just obtained a whole wood duck skin. I may have some experimenting to do.

Bob - Did you buy the skin? What does a full woodduck skin go for these days?

Yes, I bought it. Blue Ribbon had a limited number. I paid about $35.

This #5 yellow on wooden spool is the nicest of them all. I now see the bottom of my first yellow of this shade and have just one more to use. I have three other yellow shades, and the primrose, but this is da sh1t! It has a shimmer to it that the other ones are lacking.
Excellent fly, Bill!

Another excellent tie, Bill.
Also - I found the hooks you were asking for, and will have them for you in June. Plus I found another very obscure Mustad: Picture a size #14 Mustad 7948A, but the eye is straight ring, not bent down. With the beautiful deep old bronze finish. It is THE hook for North country spiders......At least for us in this day and age!!

Soft and wet - the only way....

Bill, that's gorgeous. I know where that might fool a couple sulpher sipping brownies!
