Isosplymph

Back in February 2016, while William and I were fooling around at our respective vises, I concocted a pattern that I only half laughingly called a "splymph" -- the body of a spider and the hackle/head of a flymph. After posting one of these, I learned that the concept was not totally new (what is that doesn't use a synthetic of some kind?), but I don't recall seeing anything just like it in recent times.

Anyhow, while going through some of my fly storage boxes looking for some that need to be refilled, I came across one labelled "Isosplymph" that had three interesting flies in it. I checked back on the forum to confirm that I hadn't posted this pattern previously and decided to share it. The color combination was chosen to suggest an Isonychia (slate drake) mayfly, hence the name.

Hook: Mustad 94842, Size #14
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer #14, claret
Hackle: Badger hen saddle
Tail: Two very light dun hackle fibers
Body: Two "grey goose" flight feather barbs twisted with thread tag and wound forward in close palmer wraps

Bill , that is amazing tie. I love how all the materials complement one another. I can think of a few times , that fly would have cracked the code. Thank you for posting.

A very neat concept and an exceptional pattern! Dave is right! The materials and their unique colors do compliment each other well! This has become a hallmark of your tying and I think we all agree that this is a very wonderful thing! You are going to kick some trout butts when you give these a soak!

Good looking ISO, Bill. Realistic color blending when wet, I can imagine. Phonetically difficult for such a wee thing, but very nice nonetheless.

Bill - My first glimpse of this fly was immediately followed by a desire to fish this fly. It has the look of a "confidence pattern", one sure to catch fish.

What other patterns have you got hidden away? I'd love to see them...

I’ll tell you what Bill, the more I look at that fly the more I like it. It has a very vintage, fishy look to it.
