Partridge and Orange...Starling and Green

Always fun to do school stuff with the kids. My youngest and I set out to Joann's Fabrics last week to load up on school project supplies. Before leaving, I walked by the thread aisle to check things out and saw some Silk Thread being clearanced. They had several colors available but only picked up 2, Green and Orange. I haven' t tied with silk before, but figured the price was right to try for the first time. After the results for the first ties, I went back to pick up the rest of the available colors. The silk is Coat's Seta Reale. Do any of you folks have any experience with this thread? My son's and I have a trip to Northern Michigan scheduled for this weekend to see if the trouts approve.

Not knowing the hook sizes, it's hard to be sure, but this thread looks similar to Pearsall's Gossamer in size and texture. The colors are quite bold. The spiders are well tied. The fish will judge .

Sorry about that Bill, I should have included these are on 14' and 16'S. You are right, not much subtle about the colors, very loud. My sons are into loud music, they seem to like them, we'll see about the fish.

Nice sets. I've picked up several spools of this silk over the years. The colors are awfully bold and will very likely fish great. For a p&o I prefer pearsalls but these really should serve you very well. The best use I've found for this silk is with the spinning blocks. The diameter is slightly larger than pearsalls gossamer but not by much. It's on an odd spool that doesn't fit a bobbin but when waxed and used on the block it's fantastic. Most of the historic patterns call for primrose or ash silk and there really is no equivalent color with this silk, BUT I have been using the color the call natural, it's nearly white but has a hint of cream and gray about it. When waxed it takes on a bit more of the earthy tones and creates a really nice undercolor for a hares mask dubbing or red fox. These prespun bodies with the natural shade in this silk are very compelling flymph bodies.

By the way, you could by an extra bobbin and modify it, to allow tying directly off the spools.
