Mathews' Mayfly Emerger (variation) SBS
Minor update to a Craig Mathews pattern. Tied here as a Flav (the indicator helps me spot this fly in low/flat light conditions when these bugs come out); change color/size to suit your needs.
hook - Dai Riki 135 #14
thread - Danville 6/0 olive
shuck - Congo Hair brown
abdomen - goose biot olive
thorax - dubbing olive
wing - Congo Hair black
indicator - biot hot pink
hackle - Brahma Hen olive
mash barb, start thread, tie in CH; wrap halfway down the bend
tie in (moistened) biot notch-side down (for ribbed effect); wrap forward just past the point, tie off/trimhttp://i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag128/SBPatt/Tying/Tying003/IMG_0412_zpss4gygqrv.jpg[/img]
dub thread/dub thorax
tie in a hank of CH in front of thorax, pull fibers back on either side and tie down
tie in biot, fold back and tie down
trim wing/indicator (even with back of thorax)
prep feather; tie in by tip, wrap, tie off/trim
squeeze hackle from top and bottom
cover with thread, half hitch x 2, SHHAN, trim shuck (gap width)

Scott

Scott - Please put me down for a first edition, when you get around to doing a tying book. Your tutorials are top notch textbook material.
Great fly, by the way. I love the pink indicator, and will likely incorporate the idea into a couple fishing flies.

Yea no kidding. Scott this is an exceptional job to an already proven pattern. Very nice.

Count me in as well. This is a great looking fly, exceptionally executed and remarkably presented. Thanks so much for all your efforts. I really like this pattern. I have a very high opinion of Matthews.

Re: Mathews' Mayfly Emerger (variation) SBS
The more I looked at it, the less I liked the hackling (too long), and the color (too dark) so out came the razor blade. I have some dyed partridge that I liked better, but it was too long to wind so I resorted to tie-and-tug to get what I wanted.
prepped partridge
lay the feather along the hook (adjusted the angle of the fly to help keep the thread from slipping down towards the eye), fibers on either side of the thorax, a bit long; maintaining thread tension (if you don't, the fibers will torque and roll) pull the feather butt forward 'till you get the proper length
trim butt, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Scott P. Howdy;
They are both amazing. Don't think the trout would kick either out of the stream for eating crackers.
