Spanish style wet

Used a Killer Bug yarn base for this one. A bunch of coq de Leon fibers are distributed around for the hackle.

Carl, that's an interesting design. Do you know if they fish the in a particular way?

I am curious too, Carl. What constitutes "Spanish style"? Do all of their flies look similar to this?

No, I just connect with this because many of the traditional spanish patterns use coq de Leon fibers in one way or another as hackle whether they are a wet fly or dry fly. A few years back I had a good friend send me some flies from a fly shop around Leon, Spain along with some superb examples of Coq de Leon. What a treat. But, this design was similar to one of the patterns. It had a floss body and floss rib but the coq de Leon was wrapped as hackle around as this is. Of the flies I got, they all used coq de Leon as hackle or wing material. Some of the wets had the fibers splayed like comparadun, the dries wrapped normal, clipped and had a coq de Leon wing. Obviously caddis dries.

All the bodies were floss with floss ribs and built up with nice tapers on all the flies.

Also, years ago, I came across an online site out of Leon area that sold coq de Leon and had numerous fly patterns and tying directions. I don't know if it exists anymore, I have not been able to find it recently and I think it was a rather obscure named site. Most of the patterns were inline with the examples I received.

As far as fishing these, I have had a few in my boxes for years. I fish them as you would an unweighted nymph pattern. They sink readily. I really don't know how they are specifically meant to be fished.

This specific pattern came about from my disdain of trying to tie a thick body from floss. Really a pain in the ..... the shape reminded me of a killerbug and I have tied most of the bodies with mohair yarn since. However, the floss bodies look very nice.

I found this site of Spanish style flies. http://www.pescaconmoscadeleon.com/mosc ... el-verano/ I find it interesting that the fly in the picture looks like it is tied on a spade end hook.

You can find quite a few sites if you are willing to poke around for sure. Most of the wets I have seen are of the variety where the wing is tied in veiling the top and sides with none on the bottom.
