Dennis Collier's scud/sowbug pattern. Fly kinda disappeared in the standard grey background so I subbed dark brown for a bit more contrast.

thread - Danville 6/0 black
tag - tinsel silver
rib - x-small wire silver
body - dubbing squirrel
body hackle - hen dun (undersize by 1)
hackle - hen dun

I smiled when I saw this fly. The first word that jumped into my head was "scruffy". As odd as it sounds, I mean that as a sincere compliment. The DC Hedgehog has the look of a very effective fishing pattern. Thank you for sharing.

Scott, that is a mouthful. It took some figuring to understand what was going on with that body. It's a fantastic result with the dubbing fibers standing out and the body hackle. Nice job ribbing it all without compressing the body. It looks great.

I've been on the Letort a couple times this winter, Spring Creek too, and I usually see piles of cress bugs and scuds but they're smaller. I'm curious about the conditions that would create a habitat for #12 scuds. Is this common in still water? Something I really nothing about. Thanks.

A #12 is about as big as I'd tie; #14-16 would probably be more common.

Your curiosity regarding habitats for #12 scuds prompted me to contact my friend Dennis to let him know that one of his patterns was being discussed on the flymphforum. Regarding the comments on scud hook size he said, "l have found concentrations of Gammarus scuds in Wyoming lakes that were 3/4 inch long and could have been Imitated with a size 8 or 10 TMC 3769. They grow them big in Wyoming!"
I'd also like to add that his recently revamped website will be of interest to more than a few on the forum.

Thanks, Scott and Jim. I assumed there were critters in those lakes that would surprise me. It's something I'd like to do more of. It's an interesting scud pattern and an attractive meal in general.

Jim, I'm going to have to be more careful checking out the links you post,
That one cost me $37.07 (including shipping).
As one things lead to another, I noticed the links to Southwest Fly Fishing
Mag. Well after reading a few of the "pull-you-in" articles I was drawn to
a pair of references, which Amazon "just-happened-to have" so now I'm
going to sit back and await there arrival. Both are specific to New Mexico
and from some of the preview pages look to be just what I've been looking for .
The titles are;
Fly Fishing New Mexico by Taylor Streit and Fly Fishing Guide to New Mexico by
Van Beacham. The second has a great looking section for the Gila water shed.
Something I been searching for as it the closest to me.
