Wayne - The yarn stays orange, but it does darken a little once it gets soaked thru. I'm tempted to slightly darken the back of the fly with a brown marker. It might also look nice with four or five strands of pheasant tail fibers tyed in over the back of the fly.

Dude, don't over think it- see how the original fishes first.
Cool the yarn darkens a little and the stray fibres should add a bit of translucency. Liking that "purple haze" herl as well.
The close up pics give an appreciation of just how sturdy those hooks are! Should be a really good pattern for Steelhead and your standard run of the mill rainbows. ;)

Jeff - I couldn't resist "gilding the lilly". Here is a new version I've tyed with a pheasant tail dorsal stripe and throrax wing cover.

The fly is tyed almost the same, except I tied in a bundle of five strands of pheasant tail fibers, before winding the wire rib forward. The wire rib catches and reinforces the pheasant tail fibers. The butt ends of the pheasant tail are left on, to form the wing case near the end.

Here is a photo of the fly, part way thru the construction. All the components are in place, ready to be wrapped and tied into place.

The peacock herl fibers are wrapped back towards the waiting tying thread. Two secure wraps of thread hold the herl in place.

Clip off the butt ends of the peacock herl, then wrap the tying thread forward in firm open spiral wraps. The thread wraps reinforce the peacock herl and nest down into the herl fibers.
Image

The butt ends of the pheasant tail fibers are then folded over the back of the thorax, forming the wing case. A couple firm wraps hold them in place. Trim off the butt ends of the pheasant tail fibers. Wrap the hackle feather back to the base of the thorax. Tie off and then clip off the hackle tip.

Here is a photo of the finished fly.

It has all the triggers: orange color, PT, peacock herl, UV, partridge, and segmentation) and is beautifully proportioned. What's not to like? Nicely done, Ray.

Ray, Howdy;

My amazement was due to the amount of 'Stuff' that you were able to
stack on that hook, especially a 16 and still have it looking so ... presentable.
Dagwood Bumsted would be proud ;) , 8-) , :lol: .

Thanks Hank. These hooks are more like an ordinary size 10. The size 16 was the former (and in my opinion misleading) size rating.
