Kiwi Crunchy Caddis SBS

Found this variation of Ian James' fly on a NZ site, the deer hair replacing the dubbing/clipped hackle abdomen of the original. Weight as necessary, although I've read where some folks prefer to add split shot to the leader instead. Change color/size to suit your needs.


hook - Dai Riki 280 #12
thread - Danville 6/0 black
abdomen - deer hair spun/clipped
thorax - dubbing chartreuse
head - ostrich herl black
hackle - black hen


mash barb, start thread, wrap to point above barb




you could create a standard spun/clipped body, but using a dubbing loop allows for a sparser body, and the split thread method makes it much easier, for me, to capture the deer hair than a dubbing loop; your choice
clean, stack (butt first) a clump of deer hair




insert in clip, spread evenly; trim tips






split thread, insert clip, slide clip back to allow thread to capture the deer hair and release from the clip








spin the bobbin to create a "chenille"




wrap forward to 2/3 mark; trim to a tapered shape






dub thread/dub thorax






tie in ostrich herl; spin with thread and wrap head; tie off but don't trim










tie in (folded) hackle by tip; wrap, tie off/trim






take a few more wraps of twisted ostrich in front of the hackle; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

A nice find, Scott, and exceptional SBS photos. Your hair spinning technique is new for me and bears looking into to see if it is easier than traditional "stack spinning".

Not meant to replace the traditional method if you're looking to make a floating fly (although this one would probably stay on top for a while); this split thread technique creates a sparser body for flies like this, or a Strawman.

What truly impresses me with this tye (all of your tyes are impressive by the way),
is how you managed to keep the White on top and the Tan underneath. Is there
some particular way of doing it? Where I to attempt i'd most likely have either one
color on the side and the other on the other side or both colors Barber poled...

All of the deer hair is the same; must be an issue with my camera that causes it to look two-toned (wish I could figure out a way to do that!).
