Veiled Green Caddis
As a followup to the great veiled-body caddis patterns recently posted by William and Carl, here's one that finally achieves the effect I've looking for ... a green body veiled with a translucent "glow" and a dull gray wings/legs impression:
Hook: Mustad 94842, Size #16
Tying thread: Pearsall's Gossamer #20, light olive
Hackle: Waterhen undercovert
Body: Blend of 2/3 natural cream seal and 1/3 caddis green seal spun in Pearsall's #18 green silk
Hook: Mustad 94842, Size #16
Tying thread: Pearsall's Gossamer #20, light olive
Hackle: Waterhen undercovert
Body: Blend of 2/3 natural cream seal and 1/3 caddis green seal spun in Pearsall's #18 green silk

Re: Veiled Green Caddis
That should do the trick Bill. Really well done. I have played a bit more with seal as well and I like it. You can see the translucent properties in the photography of the dubbing alone. I find it floats more than most think as well, usually you only find it on wet flies, I think it is quite functional as a dry fly dubbing. Nice photo too.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

That's a beauty. I can't wait to throw that into the Deschutes (the one in WA not OR).

Bill, the seal is probably the best solution, or at least one I need to get back to. This is a great tie and a should spark a lot of interest.

Re: Veiled Green Caddis
Bill,
Several years ago I created a very similar pattern using wool yarn. This was part of the "Itch Scratcher" series I posted.
Hook - Mustad Model 94842/Size 12 Turned-Up Eye (TUE)
Tread - Gossamer Silk (Green)
Hackle - Bleached Hungarian Partridge
Body - Natural Wool Dubbing (Pale Green Blend)
Rib - Tying Silk
Quite similar. I really like the look of the waterhen hackle.

Great looking fly Bill! I am a believer in the veiled flies.
I remember that pattern Ray. I mimicked it with a few patterns and still do well with them.

Right on, Ray. That is a beautifully tied version. That really looks spot on. Such a nice effect.

As William observed RE: his recent caddis pattern, nothing is new under the sun. Thanks to all for your comments.

Bill and Ray,
I think we've died and gone to flymph heaven! Both patterns are knock outs! And, talk about fish magnets!! I really can't see either one lasting very long upon any fishy looking stretch you choose!
You guys are awesome! I hope that someday, I can tie like y'all!!
My happiness is not veiled, it's out there bright and shiny!

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.
