I saw reference to this pattern on another forum and was impressed with both its looks and reported success at catching fish. So, I looked it up in Mike Valla's "The Founding Flies" book and tied it more or less to the recipe he gives. Substitutions used are noted in parentheses:
Hook: Mustad 9671 nymph hook (Daiichi 1710), Sizes #8 - #12
Thread: Black 6/0
Tail: Specked guinea hen body feather
Rib: Small oval gold tinsel (later versions reportedly used copper wire)
Body: Black seal fur or lamb's wool (used black wool; don't know if it's lamb or adult)
Wing case: Green raffia (dark olive Swiss straw)
Thorax: Black chenille
Hackle: Gray Hungarian partridge

Real nice fly; like that guinea tail a lot.

Re: Martinez Black Nymph
Bill, this looks great. I'd be tempted to try a few other colors in the brown, red, orange, yellow, and olive ranges—just to see what happens.

Nifty! Looks like a very effective fly. I plan to give these a try and report back.

Right up my alley! That bug has everything I look for in a Soft Hackle that I intend to dredge with. Profile, color, and a great hackle. Extremely well done Bill!

Wow Bill!
This one is tops! I needed something big and juicy and pushin' a lot of water out of the way this evening when I came to call on the pond and it was a tad muddy from the recent heavy rains. This pattern would have been perfect! Your tying, like always, is superb! Keep us fed Bill with your wonderful works!

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.
