Blue Dun (Medium)
Here is one of Pete Hidy's published patterns. This one is the Blue Dun (Medium) from Famous Flies and Their Originators by T. Donald Overfilled, 1972. I am working through all the published patterns of Mr. Hidy. This one is also going on my IBF Hat.
Blue Dun (Medium)
Hook: 14, 15 or 16. long shank mayfly. (I used a Mustad 31218 #14)
Silk: Primrose
Body: Muskrat fur blended with blue wool dubbing. (I'm guessing here on the mix, I mixed approx. 3/4 muskrat with 1/4 light blue mohair)
Rib: Gold wire (optional)
Hackle: Medium blue-dun or starling feather from the marginal coverts (I used medium blue dun hen)
Whisks: Medium blue-dun hackle fibers

I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

Excellent in all respects.

Thanks Bill. Did you notice I even went for the conical head? Out of my zone, but I admit it looks nice on the classic flymphs.

Great stuff as usual, Carl. That'll look good in the hat.

Nice Blue Dun, Carl. I'm looking forward to seeing the other Hidy flies you come up with. This is a really nice representation. When I prespin bodies for the Blue Duns, it's a more sparse dubbing and you can see more of the silk...but that's not what I saw most often in Hidy's wallet. This is closer to many of the flies I saw.
