Lightning Bug Softhackle SBS
Really liked this version http://www.flymphforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... htning+bug
decided to make a few minor changes. Apologize for the lighting on the photos - I was on vacation when I shot these and didn't have the best illumination.
hook - Dai Riki 280 #14
thread - MFC 8/0 brown
tail/shellback - pheasant tail
rib - x-small wire copper
abdomen - opal mylar tinsel
thorax/head - peacock herl
hackle - brown hen
mash barb, start thread about 1 eye width back from eye; tie in wire, wrap to bend and back
take a few pt fibers, even tips, measure (gap width past bend); tie in
pull pheasant down over back, spiral rib forward; helicopter end and cover with thread
tie in a couple peacock herls
prep hackle; tie in
wrap peacock forward to hackle; tie down but don't trim
wrap hackle, stroking fibers back; tie off/trim
take a few more wraps of peacock in front; tie off, trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN
Regards,
Scott

Wow. I've never seen this pattern. This is a great SBS Scott, thanks!

Superbly dressed fly. Your construction sequence is textbook quality. Kudos.
Thank you for a wonderful addition to the tutorials.

Gets me in the mood to crank out some sbs. I need a color plate for lighting though.

I just prop up a sheet of grey 2mm foam behind my vise (leans against my Ott light).Smuggler wrote: I need a color plate for lighting though.

Oh nice! I'll have to stop at Hobby Lobby and see what I can find. Thanks for the great tip.

Nice thing about grey foam behind the fly is it lets these "too dang smart" cameras pick the proper exposure. I used to tote around a 17% gray card to aid in proper exposure when I used my film camera.ScottP wrote:I just prop up a sheet of grey 2mm foam behind my vise (leans against my Ott light).Smuggler wrote: I need a color plate for lighting though.

Great remake of my remake!
Very nice contribution and great variation for lighter pattern.

I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.
