I received some Hends body quill material a couple weeks ago and am getting to play with it a bit. The Hends body material I am working with has variegated color and if worked right can give a darker thorax which I like. I really like the effect it gives. It is fine, at least what I ordered, so it is nearly impossible to get it very smooth like you might with floss or silk thread. It's a work in progress. This fly is on a #16 hook.

Body: ginger thread underbody with Hend's multi-color body quill in yellow/brown

Very old school style with new school materials.
Love the classic hook.
The Hends material does not look too unlike well waxed Pearsall primrose silk.

Nice way to go modern- yet true to form.

It is interesting stuff Jeff. Like very fine colored tinsel with a strand of thread. It is not all one piece. looks like 3 strands of material all together. I need to look closer at it with some assistance.

Will you be using something like Deer Creek UV Resin on them? That seems to be the trend I have been seeing quite often when using the Hends body quill.

You are pretty well zeroed in the Carl, I have a few spools of it here- but do not use it much. Makes nice tags and ribs for smaller patterns, but I have never really played with the full quill body look using this product.
It is like a very fine mylar tinsel with very-very fine synthetic reinforcing threads in a loose twist.

Good point Wayne, the "bare" product and little sharp trout teeth may not play well together.

I've never even heard of this product. Then again I'm mostly out of the loop on stuff like this

Does the body material change color when wet?

No real color change. Doubt it soaks up much.

I doubt I'll take the time or spend the money to coat with a UV Resin either. It seams to be pretty durable stuff.

This is a classic looking pattern indeed! At first, I thought it was the look of the hook but now I think it's a combination of great looking iron, first rate materials choices, and impecible tying! It really looks good and extremely fishable! Do you plan on getting some of these wet in the upcoming year?
Just plain awesome Carl! May we see more like these in the near future?

Carl, I really like this little fly. I've seen a few now with this material and I may have to find some to try. I really like the irregular, textured effect of the body, more bug-like than silk by a stretch. I'll get to go to a show at the end of the month so I'm sure I'll bring some bag to fool with. This is a great looking little spider and a nice shot.
