[Old Hat]

Adapted from a Shane Stalcup pattern I used to tie. A surface film rider.

Hook: 2x long dry
Thread: Pearsall's silk, primrose
Tail: woodduck flank fibers
Body: thread formed into a cigar shape
Wing: natural cdc
Hackle: partridge

Old/New Hat, Howdy;

Very interesting, appears to be a nifty and simple tye.
Wouldn't mind doing a SBS would ya??? I'm curious about
how you did the CDC over the hackle and incorporating
part of the hackle into the tail. The how to's are what I'm
most interested in...

First off the tail and hackle are different materials.

1. I tied in the wood duck tail fibers
2. Then I tied in two type 1 CDC feathers by the tips at the base of the tail.
3. Build the cigar shaped body
4. Attach and wrap hackle just as you would on spider.
5. Pull the CDC snug across the top of the fly and hackle and tie down at the head.

Easy peasy.

Easy for you to say...

Dang those tail and hackle barbs look an awful lot alike. It looks like you may
have folded the top of the hackle back under the CDC and let them 'peek'
out the back to become the tail... That's one reason I asked.

Interesting pattern.
Had I tried to tie something similar without seeing this example first, I possibly would have stopped (started) the CDC wing only half way down the hook shank. The full body cover is an interesting take and a lot of aquatic nymphs are a lighter colour underside than on top, so it lends itself to looking like a transitional hatching insect.
Nice neat tie of a "stage" often ignored.

Carl, this is such an effective looking pattern. I've fished something vaguely similar, and even though it went unappreciated on the water, I liked the way it behaved. This looks much more appealing. Thanks for the SBS.

That pattern I refer to from Shane Stalcup is a lot more complicated to tie. It is also a lot "heavier fly" than this design. I have had great days fishing with it almost exclusively on stillwater and very slow runs. Seems to perform the best when the fish are actively sipping the surface. By simplifying this one I am hoping that it will be effective in this scenario and also not so type specific that it will also fish a bit better in other conditions.

I do like the cdc along the entire back as it sits the fly horizontal on the surface. Just a different perspective than the hanging rear end of a lot of "emerger" patterns tied with cdc.

I have been tying a lot of "test" designs lately. Something I haven't done in a few years. Every year I tie several new patterns and test them out but it has been a while since I have concentrated on new (to me) "designs" .

Thanks Ruard. I was after the Pale Morning Dun with this one. I haven't tried it with foam. I really didn't want it to float to high, just in or under the water's surface.
