I like everything about this delicate little fly of yours.
Valley Quail shows up a lot in my father's fly wallet.
It is extremely soft, and has that nice whitish stripe down the middle of the barbs.
I have feathers here, but have never seen a skin.

We call them California Quail out here. They are as common as any other bird in the yard. They are always cleaning up the chicken's scratch that gets outside the pen. Beautiful birds and a cool sound as well.

Carl - Interesting comment. I'm pretty sure I already own a California Quail skin (gotta look when I get home). When I ordered this skin, I though a Valley Quail was a different species. Now I think I own two...

In case anyone is curious, here is a photo of my Valley (California) Quail skin.


I used the one of the tiny feathers along the back of the neck, to hackle my fly.

The feathers in the middle of the back are larger and are a darker dun color, with an olive green cast to them.

The feathers along the rump (each side of the tail), have cream colored sides and dark center list.

Underneath the wing you will find some interesting feathers with a white center strip. The quills and under coveret feathers are a light bluish dun.
