soft hackle crayfish pattern

Post by newriverspey » Fri Jan 17, 2014 12:51 pm

The local tailwater is not cooperating for trout fishing, so I started thinking about smallmouth fishing this summer. I tied a soft hackle crayfish pattern. Hope it works.

Nice design. Should work great. Ever thought about tying a knot around the rubber legs? Tying them into two bundles.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.

That would also likely work on steelhead. Excellent fly. I'd fish it with confidence.

Old Hat,
I have not thought of tying the legs in a knot. Do you mean tying the knot at the end of legs to make them look jointed. Thanks for the input. Otto

Carl/Otto - I wonder if the loops in knotted legs would cause them to get fouled up with the hook. If you fish both versions, I'd be interested to hear if they fish any differently.

newriverspey, Howdy;

That's a tasty looking mudbug. My first thought, when I read Carl's
suggestion about tying the legs, was figure -8'ing them like this;

to get the legs to splay out to the sides a bit more.

Way to go, Otto! We don't usually see soft-hackled crayfish patterns, but this should do well. Nice job, and thanks for sharing. I'm hoping for some stream pics soon, or better yet, maybe I can make it down there this Spring.

Good lord that's right in the money Otto. That fly us going to destroy smallies. I'd like to see the action honestly.

Kevin and William,
I am expecting both of you to come down and visit. The fishing is suppose to be better this year and June through the first of August are the best times. As a matter of fact anyone that wants to come down and swing flies for smallies is welcome and I would enjoy having you visit my neck of the woods.
