Birdnest Variation

[DUBBN]

These are complete variations of the pattern that has taken the board by storm as of late. In fact, they are probably considered a Sub species!

I used Wood Duck dyed Mallard, actual Wood Duck, and Green Winged Teal for the collars. Natural Hares Ear, Black Hares Ear, and natural ostrich in a variety of combinations for the bodies.

The waters I will be fishing tomorrow are high and very stained. If there is 12 inches visibility I will be lucky. Therefore, I want the patterns a little darker than the original. These patterns are tied on a size 14 Mustad 9671 hook. They will be the trailing flies behind some large Stone nymphs and Caddis emergers in sizes 10 through 6.

Those look good, Wayne. Be sure to let us know how they work. I have been tying a few variations on the Hare's ear soft hackle, trying different feathers for the hackle besides brown partridge. To me, that's a big part of the fun.

Agreed, it does appear that way and I am in envy of the way your tying is developing and wish my own was doing the same!
The thorax variation is a nice twist, as are the variations of hackle material. It will be interesting to see which trigger the most response.

Some of the Rubber legged Stones the Birds Nests will be trailing. These are the small ones. Sizes 10, 2X and 4X long.



In the faster water the trout will probably have about a second to decide if it's food or not. These abominable creations shout out, "Look at me! Look at me!"

I believe in higher, faster and/or cloudier water, you are a wise man to use an "attractor" fly in your team.
These should work well for you in that respect.

Cal Bird is rolling in his grave more of interest and joy! Those are some nice variants. Try putting some sparking dubbing on those flies and hold on! But I'm married now to the original. ololol

My patterns ride the razors edge. The trout have 1 second to take the offering. If they inspect the pattern for 2 seconds they laugh their selves to death. Pretty close to the truth.

I tied up 10 with Grizzly Hackle. Very cool. I'll throw them out on Wednesday!!!!
