Jim: Thanks for the added information on page 2. This helps round out the information and adds to the discussion.

Mike: I don't agree with you about business practices being status quo, needing to gash the eyes out of every buyer for the sake of the mighty$$$. Business is as you make it and as a small business person who succeeds at the endeavor, it is possible to set your own ground-rules, such as catering to customer loyalty. I support small business when ever possible, taking the time to sniff out people who are willing to make the effort of small business in a BIG BUSINESS world. It takes a lot to raise birds, R&D, ship and supply. Understood. Still you don't have to market the A+, even B+, merchandize to people who do not know the difference, appreciate or need that grade of feather. This is my main point. Fly dressing is esoteric. Fly tier don't need a finite amount of feathers, it varies. I need lots of 18/20 grizzly hackle for dry flies on the small rivers I fish. They are now so expensive it it out of my reach cost wise and I'm completely out. You may need the whole cape. But the fashion industry doesn't care! Give them the second best and let us go one with what we, the loyal customer who will be here years down the road, need. By definition to be altruistic is to give at the expense of oneself. Foolish. I agree. However, To be loyal is to extend a hand to those who stand by you and you by them.

Its just fashion,when it is over they have made alot of income and knowledge more.
Then its back to the old days till another fashionindustry discovers feathers.
Cant blame anyone for doing business.

I agree, fly shops don't have an easy go of it, and I for one am happy that they found a nice windfall. I am not sure why the lack of dry fly hackle should offend people on a flymph board, but maybe I am missing something. I just saw an interesting article about how the fashion industry is falling off, and there will soon be a glut of unused hackle on ebay. I have never seen so much hen available ever.

Remember, we fishers are a fickle bunch. We'll coiurt a saddle for a year, whole the hairdresser's will call and say " I'll take all you've got" doesn't take an MBA to see a good opportunity.

I don't know about this. The craze seems to really just be starting here in Canada (Ontario). At least it is the first time I've seen the procedure advertised and now I'm actually seeing the hackles in people's hair here. Maybe when the craze dies out we'll be picking up hackles from the hairdressers at cut rate prices!!

I have no problem with what you are doing as to the fact that years ago i bought all the main colors a few others in capes at least three of each, every payday if i had extra money it went into tying supplies, i figured id better hoard all i could because someday i might not be able to get what i wanted or needed due to availabilty or shops shuttin down. As for hen i prefer hen sets ..like when you used to get the hencape an saddle from Hoffman, i have some whiting but most of my stuff is Hoffman some Metz,a few Specer, Keogh?,some Chanticleer..ect.
Only thing i need now are some good Brahma in tan an also straw, i iwsh there was such a thing as Coq De Leon in hen .

I have two Whiting Coq de Leon Hen capes that are just amazing. If you can find one, you'll like the results.
Maybe Jim can let us know if there are any to be had.

As a matter of fact there is such a thing as CdL Hen and I have some! I haven't posted it on Jimsflyco yet. The cape colors I have are White, Silver Speckled and Brown Speckled. There also is saddles available as well but these tend to tie sizes 12ish and larger.
I should have Brahma Golden straw capes on the site and I have 1 tan available but it is not on the site.
