Tenkara in the house

Recently we had a post asking if Tenkara was a passing fad. Well one has just entered my house and I've got to say the idea and rod are both fascinating. Given the general idea of technique is the same, wet fly presentation, I think this might be something to try for back country trips. Karen was able to pick the rod up at the Pasadena Fly Fishing Show last weekend and has sworn to learn everything she can about the rod. She is planning on taking it to Montana next month and fishing it heavy. I told her she'd have to tie her own flies, cuz I was not going to do all that work... I lied. I've been tying a surprise dozen. I'll revisit this rod once we are back in May. Oh I forgot to mention... I be on the grip end of her rod as well. The rod is the ITO 13-14.7. Yes, simplicity. It is one of the reason I only carry 10 traditional wet fly patterns and I also have a box with only 3 dry patters, 3 nymph patterns and 4 emerger patterns. I also have a small little pocket box that holds 3 streams and 3 terrestrials, all on one size in each pattern. the only difference is the colors. so it is 3x3. Three sizes, three colors: blk, olive, tan. But Tenkara is really over the top when it comes to simplicity and so much like wet fly fishing.

If you bought the traditional furled line it also works very well for drys.

This is starting to grow on me, I've been reading little nick nack articles here and there and I think a tenkara rod might be added to the quiver. It's very interesting to say the least.

O.H. that website is totally sick. I love the Sumo rod. The grip is killer. But I can still spend 150.00 and get the Tenkara experience without breaking the bank.

Tenkara IS wet fly fishing (wingless wets, by the way). Dries and nymphs are mostly American adaptations. There are tenkara anglers in Japan who use them, but they are definitely in the minority.

Dame whosit wrote her treste in 14 somthing..... wonder if there
is anything in Japanese or any other Asian archives about fishing with flys
maybe something from the 14 somethings or maybe eariler ?????

Wish someone had access to and knows how to read some of the old Asian stuff...
