Benicchi Thread

I ordered 4 spools of the stuff yesterday in 12/0. Being able to take close up pictures of my patterns has shown me how poorly my 8/0 Uni has been working for me. Especially on my size 22 thread bodyed nymphs and emergers. I am not saying the patterns dont work just aswell as they ever did for catching fish, just they look a little rough around the edges to me. I know, lay down a good foundation and maintain good thread control, and most of my problems will disappear. Thats true. I have noticed the UTC 70 thread lays out very nice, and I dont struggle near as much with it to get a smoothe tapered abdomen. So why not use the UTC? I do, but, I have never been able to finish a spool of it. Every spool I have purchased ends up with the thread being wrapped over itself deep in the spool. I have different colors from three different suppliers and I still get the problem. Think of a spinning reel. Then remember when you wound that reel with slack line. You end up reeling the middle of the line over the business end of the line. Thats the problem I am having.

Anyway,I have heard good reviews about the Benicchi thread here on this forum. I ordered Olive, Tobacco, Sandy, and Dark Dun. The total amount including shipping came to 20.00. I know, kinda pricey, but if I can use the entire spool I will be money ahead.

I am sure I ordered from the wrong site, and had I shopped a little longer I could have gotten the thread and shipping much cheaper from so and so's site, but this was kind of an impules buy. I saw it when I wasnt expecting it and I bought it! LOL

Well thats my mindless rambling for the day. I woke up early this morning with the intent of fishing the Gunnison River. I dont know why, but the mood isnt there. I think I better stop being a grumpy old man, and get a local fishing buddy. Wade fishing alone is losing some appeal.

I have never tried the Benicchi thread, but it is supposed to be nice stuff (at least that is the impression I have from what I've read on-line). I have used a couple other fine-diameter threads that have given me good results. I like the UNI-Thread Trico thread (17/0). It only comes in white (to my knowledge anyway), but it is easily colored with markers to give you any color you want. The thread is extremely fine diameter (looks like a strand of silk in a spider's web), but surprisingly strong. I love this stuff when I want an ultra smooth underbody (practically zero build-up or lumpiness).

Another fine-diameter thread I use is Gudebrod's 10/0 thread. This is probably the smoothest thread I have ever used. Really nice stuff and it came in some great natural colors. Unfortunately, Gudebrod does not sell the stuff any more. A couple years ago, I bought a full set of colors from Chris Helms (the famous tyer who runs Whitetail Fly Tieing). He had bought up the remaining stock of this thread when Gudebrod decided to take it off the market. He may still have some, left, but I doubt that he has all of the colors any more.

I wish I lived closer. I'd gladly tag along if you wanted a fishing partner. It might even keep you out of trouble with the Misus for a while.

Yeah, you would keep me out of trouble with the Naz,,,Misus, but I am sure I would get you in trouble with yours.

I've been tying with the Griffith's Sheer 14/0 for a few years and love the stuff. I can't say that I don't have issues, about 1/5 ends up with some of those problems, wasting a good bit of a spool and my time. But it's not enough that I have given up the stuff. It's about the same diameter as the Benicchi 12/0 as I understand it, and I love the colors. Especially for $3 a spool.

Can't comment on the domestic issues. Mine are solid, but I haven't pushed to find where the limits are in some time. It wont be long.

I have some Benecchi thread, and I love it. A friend showed me his Danville Spider Web Thread in 16/0 today, and I liked it, although I have not used it myself. It was surprisingly strong, as I asked him to show me the breaking strength of it. I have also used UTC 70 denier. That one is pretty good, but I like Benecchi better.

Is this the Gordan Griffith’s 14/0 Thread ? I found a couple colors in a Flyshop in Basalt Colorado today. There was no name on the spools and the salesman had no idea.
I bought the thread in Grey and Black.

After doing a quick Google image search, it looks like this is in fact the Griffith's 14/0 Sheer thread. Maybe someone else out there can prove me wrong.
