Wire Bodied 1250's

Post by William Anderson » Thu Feb 23, 2012 10:07 am

So I haven't been tying much, but have managed a few recently. Then I tried setting up my photo assembly last night. I usually appreciate and prefer some critical comments, but at this point, please be nice. :D :D

These are Daiichi 1250's. I really like these hooks.

These are #14 Daiichi 1250's. I really like these hooks.
William,

I will be nicely critical - does that work for ya?

I like the flies (and the hook).

I prefer the first one over the second. Six to seven turns of 'ribbing' may be a little much?

On the displaying side - you might consider leveling the front half of the shank (tip the hook up a fraction). To my eye this style of hook shows better that way. Just a suggestion.

Glad to see you back tying flies and posting them! 8-)

Cheers,

Hans' comments are spot on, particularly with respect to hook orientation for display purposes. Nice tying, w.

Tough audience! ;)

Looking good William. Looks like you jumped back in with both feet. I'm looking forward to seeing more (no pressure of course  )

I really like the dark olive wire with black hackle. This style hook looks great with slender bodied flies. Good on you!

William...can you retake the images with the hook angle changed?....I think it would be interesting to see the difference from the same camera

My only complaint would be that the 1st one isn't your new avatar...LOL

I really like the first one. Both are top notch. That is a nice hook too. I've only used that hook in large sizes tying heavy nymphs for friend's orders. Looks nice for spiders.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Hans, your comments are helpful and dead on. A few months ago I wouldn't have let that kind of thing slide, at the moment...I just didn't catch it. Thank you sincerely for the suggestions.

My pic set-up is in transition so shooting these was kind of weird, but as with other things, it has to get worse before it gets better, and I've got big plans for such a simple little set up. Give me an undetermined amount of time and I'll have it worked out and post it. It and the tying cabinet (no longer just a portable station) is pretty cool. I'll put it back up and reshoot the olive fly if you like. I see it both ways, I fall into the camp of do it to the best of your ability if you're going to do it, or to the point that you care, but also another position. I find the photographing of these flies in itself interesting and important and also kind of silly to a point. When the pics either effect what I'm willing to share, or worse, discourage anyone else from posting what on their vise I find that unacceptable. Fortunately, I don't find it an either/or and happily ride the fence. I hope you find my pics as falling into the first camp, but I'm comfortable at times someplace in between.

The posts and number of pics posted in this forum has continued to grow and demonstrates a diverse and exceptional group of tiers. Kudos to this group.

I seem to always say too much these days. My apologies.

Great flies and the photos are fine for what I want-something clear enough so I can tie my own from your dressing. :)

If you find I said too much - then I apologize.
