one fly and one hook
just curious to know what you guys would pick if you had just one size and brand of hook in which to tie one type of fly to fish, what would it be? for me it would be a #19 tiemco 102y hook and purple and dun hen hackle. i am curious to see how you respond. thanks. otto
Re: one fly and one hook
For fresh water a # 8 Mustad 9672 for an black electric woolly bugger just barely nosing out a Sanchez convertible.
Re: one fly and one hook
Mine would be an admittedly poor imitation of Hans' elk hair caddis tied on a #16 Mustad 94840.

Re: one fly and one hook
For me it would be a Kamasan B525 and the fly would be a winged Greenwell's. over 60% of my fish come from this fly as it is versatile producing fish in olive hatches and sedge hatches. It also a great 'pulling' fly when the fish are on the bottom.

For me it would be a Tiemco 102Y 17# to tie a Noel Jetson style Red Tag.
Here's a photo of the culprit, absolutely slays the browns in Tassy. My best day ever was 29 polaroided browns on a highland lake caught on two of these guys, they last between 10-15 fish. I don''t like reinforcing the body with thread, you don't get the same neat body if you do.

Well mate, Noel is a personal friend of mine and I used to ties thousands of these for him when he had Jetfly in Cressy (Tasmania). The only difference between his pattern and this one was 2 turns of gold lurex under the tag.
Gosh those were the days. Camping in his backyard with 100's of rooster crowing every morning. I need to get back there.
Now try this on them Tassie rivers:
I have used it and the trout love them.

Re: one fly and one hook
Thanks Phil,
I also tie it with the gold lurex under the tag, but prefer the plain version. You should try to make it back soon if you can, this year and the next season look like they are going to be cracking.
Have you got a bigger photo of your greenwells, it looks stunning? I've seen lot's of different renditions, but would love to sneak a closer peek at yours.

Re: one fly and one hook
Don't have the model number handy at the moment (later)........but i'd have to go with a size 12 barbless Gamakatsu dry fly hook, and my Variation (the Highly Unusual Usual) of Fran Betters' Usual.
Hook: you know the deal
Thread: Orange Danville 6/0
Tail: (trailing shuck), Snowshoe Rabbit foot guard hairs
Body: Snowshoe Rabbit foot underfur
Wing: Snowshoe Rabbitt foot guard hairs
Collar: Hungarian Partridge feather in front of wing
As you all should know by now.....i do a series of three variations of the original Usual which uses a Snowshoe Rabbitt foot underfur body.
1. the Unusual.....same as the Usual but with a Peacock herl body
2. the Highly Unusual.....same but with a CDC body &
3. the Highly Unusual Usual.....same but tyed with any of the 3. different body styles and the addition of the collar, and always with an Orange head.
This variation #3. being the most versatle of all the four different patterns, is why i would make it my go to fly. As it can be altered all throughout the day, and fished in so many various ways.
