Re: Steelhead/Salmon Flymphs..... ;>)
Kelly.......i have EVERY confidence in you.............and btw, EVERYBODY is a, "Jazz people"...........they just have to be smart enough to find that out for themselves.........blessed enough to be led to it along the way..........or tounched with the innate sensibility to simply realize that if you LISTEN.....you'll hear. But even then.......while it (the message), is there for everyone........it can only be grasped by those who are willing to put in the time, do the homework, and pay the dues required.
So no longer confuse yourself by fallin' victum to a "devide & conqure" mentality, by seperating music in terms of thinking incorrectly...........
Jazz vs. Motown.....those words me NOTHING. They are mere marketing tools. When it comes to music, there are only two kinds.....good & bad.

WAY cool!!! I love it. Love the tail and hackle, especially.
Question - Is the location of the head by design? I have seen this done to allow room for riffle/turle knots in some surface flies.

Thankx Ray.....yes, the location of the head is exactly be design. And yes, it does have (albeit not nessessarily on this fly, as it's a subsurface design), everything to do with allowing room for a riffling hitch........but also, i've just always liked the "Look" of steelhead flies with the heads set back.
btw.....many of the flies i will be posting at the thread.........will not have tags..........especially if the fly is tyed on a black nickel, silver, gold, red, blue, green, or whatever hook of that nature........i simply do not see it as nessessary. Wait'll you see what's next.
Also, i would like to dedicate this thread to the memory of the late Scotty Howell of the PNW...........Scotty was a big influence on me and a great inspiration, as a tyer and a person. His flies and specially his heads, were impeccable, and the heads were always set back.

Ok, here's the first boneified example of half the reason i started this thread............the first half of the reason, of course bein', that i just wanted to get some of you up off your you know what's and tyin' these type of flies so we'd have an evem more dynamic site here..............but also, to develop our
mind-set to include a much wider picture of what this stuff is really all about............WWWAAAYYYYYY beyond catching fish. So, to that end..........here's two pics of the same fish, from opposite sides. And here's what happened.............. When i tyed in the hackle to be taken thru the thorax and also used for the collar.......i didn't realize at first that is was a bit short to really get that entire job done correctly.............but i gotta thing bout time.......and NOT wasting it.......so i'm thinkin'....hell, this is a fishin' fly........"Make it work!" ................you dig? So i did...........now of course the fly is by nature, never gonna be what it could of been, "looks wise." But trust me..........fish don't give a damn. So this fly is a classic example of makin' "somethin'" outta nothin' so-to-speak. Or not lettin' the cross, cross you up.....lettin' the cross, help you GET across. Bright Moments!

I have had this problem too. I found a little trick that does wonders for the cosmetics (when that is the goal). Soak the fly, adjust the hackle collar and set the fly to dry overnight. Great trick for shaping all kinds of flies.

Re: Steelhead/Salmon Flymphs..... ;>)
Right Ray, i know that trick.............but the whole point, is that there IS no problem. The philosophy behind the thread, (besides just bein' a fun thing for all of us to get into.........Steelie/Salmon flymphs).........is to learn ways to improvise........and "see" things in NEW lights.......to be as creative as possible by lookin' at things with a "different" attitude, so-to-speak. A problem (mistake) is only that, if that's how you wanna see it. CHOICES......or it's all in one's point of view.........in other words, if the fish will take it..........nuff said. And don't get me wrong............i am NOT sayin' one shouldn't ALWAYS strive for his best in fly tying...........i'm sayin' "get over it." Course, this is ONLY for fishin' flies...................show flies........well, that's another ball-a-wax.
Obviously...........there is going to be mixed interpetations of what this thread is all about...........but the bottom line is.........it's all about havin' FUN!!!!! Pretty simple........i'd just as soon see nothin' but orginal tyes here.........all flies invented by their respective tyers. But that's not nessessary......thing is, to come up with "Flymphs" tyed to catch Steelhead and Salmon, be creative, and do NOT worry bout bein' perfect............"you'll never be perfect.....all you'll ever do, is reach a certain degree of excellence." Art Blakey...........Hell of a formula for FUN!
Here's the fly i did after bein' inspired by Kelly's swimming hook weighted Tenkara nymph......which btw, is a VERY original idea because it is a three fold innovation on her part...........a weighted Tenkara fly......."thinking" of it as a nymph.......and doin' it on such a hook.
This is not the best pic Misa could of got to show this fly off........but that matters not, and i'm not about to ask her to shoot it again. You can see i put the tail in where i did (at the begining of the bend i put in the hook), and why..... (which actually turned out to be a good thing....."point" of the thread), and if you've been following the thread, you know the recipe.

Mark, this is simply a great fly for fishing, in my opinion. I don't see how a fish can resist it. Love the colors and the shine.
