I posted this some time ago but have recovered it for reference. Yep I know it is not too pretty any more.

This fly was tied in the eartly 1800's and you can see two interesting things (a) the length of the hackle (and I have other patterns from the same era where the hackle is longish) and (b) the amount of hackle used. Not your bog standard 2 turns hey.

I also use google translate when contributing to a Norwegian tying forum (I don't know a single word in Norwegian). I must admit it's a bit of a worry not knowing what google translate has decided to say. I figure at worst I'll be giving the guys a bit of a laugh.

Cool post. Sexy loops, those classics always get my attention, no matter how many times I ser them. These are spot on. Philip, that old fly would have been just the ticket this morning in PA. I fished the upper yellow beeches using a weighted hares ear to get the pair of softies down. The water was high and faster than usual so my point fly was a larger than average p & o with a wild thorax and bushier hackle than average. A Good reason to keep your earliest flies. That historic fly you posted would cause quite a commotion.
(took 3 average wild browns on a day that seemed pretty unlikely. I always feel like I have a great advantage with these types of flies in my box. )

Those are WONDERFUL flies.........VERY well tyed. FFWM.....your fly there is way cool. Looks like an Octopus, or a Squid on steroids. Way cool fly.....love to see it in the water.

Sorry Mark I'll try to do better. I was going to say Mericans but I was going to spell it more like this 'mericans. Sorry that is my British english Canadian upbringing. I'm sure I would have been corrected on my spelling.

I'm also sure you've noticed my grave errors in spelling and have just been too much of a gentleman to mention it.

How would the translator spell it?
