Re: Artistic JazzFlies
At this point there are many things........1. while the tail looks even worse than it really is in this pic.....i prolly would of set it longer. 2. i would of added some of the same feathers i used under the wing, as a throat perhaps, tyed in LONG.....Speyish lookin'
2. and a half, lol.....also i would of put a few up on top, to fill in the gap between the wing feathers.
3. the length of the fibers in the collar are to short.......i should of tried to find a feather with longer barbs/fibers......but on that particular saddle there weren't any.......i did try.
4. i think some JC nails would of been good too......or "something" for cheeks.
Very often it is even MORE important to know what NOT to add, as opposed to "what" to add............but in this case, i kinna feel the fly is incomplete lookin'............i need to make some serious improments in the original idea i had for this fly................. ..........and i will.
This fly is pretty much a complete disaster.....but i still like it in the sense that i will never forget what i learned in tying it.....and it was a fun challange, not that i rose to the occassion sufficiantly whatsoever...............

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Thanks Mark. I enjoyed the insights. I am really surprised by your comment #3, regarding the length of the CDL fiber length. It is very rare to see CDL fibers of that length. I have only come across one set of feathers close to this, and used them up long ago on a set of steelhead flies. That must be one damn fine saddle you've got. I found some nice CDL feathers in the pack you sent to me (thanks!).

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
"Some" of the CDL i sent you, came off the same saddle the feather on this fly did.....& some of the CDL i sent you came off another saddle. i wanted to make sure you had at least a coule colors. i have three undyed & one dyed CDL saddles and then this stash that came from Spain that i hardly ever use. It's a show piece kinna thing (a binder/folder kinna thing), with samples of all the different types of CDL inside. i should post pics of that someday.........
Remember i did a fly a few months ago, using that same bead as in this fly, and it was going into the box for Conclave...........well, i ended up pullin' that fly. i still have it here.............decided it wasn't gettin' "donated." Rough estimate of the number of donated flies (all originals), i've just given away, meaning i will NEVER know what the hell the dang recipe was..............maybe 1,000.....proably more actually......could actually, very easily, be double that over the last decade. i don't keep track at all............what would be the point. My accountant believes whatever i tell 'em. And unless we ever get audited.....what the hell difference does it make........ .......the weird thing is.....alllllllll those recipes up in a puff of smoke.......oh well.

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Just whiped out another......in well under two hours........despite having to chop the initial layer of thread, from the front back to where the bead hadda go, when it was time to put it on and..........well, you know the drill. Bleep happens. It aint nothin' any big deal at all.....just a fun little fly that was beggin' to get tyed up. i used a dyed blue Silver Laced Whyendott rooster feather (saddle hackle) for the palmering and collar.........stuff is "NICE!" Got that from Diego Slattery and a buch more colors too. .....Thankx Jim.
i'll send ya the fly with...........ah, whenever i finally remember to mail you back the key to cabin 3.

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
That is the COOLEST FRICKIN' hook I have ever seen. Looks like it came off the page of a Dr. Seuss book. I love this fly Mark. I get a very happy vibe off this one...
As I study this hook more, it reminds me of the openings on the front of a Chello. Can you picture what I mean?

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Thankx Ray.....you mean cello.....those are called F-holes. Shaped like an F.........same on a arch top (flat tops have round holes), hollow body quitar, or violin, viola, or contrabass.
Here's one i did for the Sowbug Box......just a little somethin' for Steelhead fishin'.....that hackle came off a Guinea skin i got from Christina (Chevron Hackles), over in England in '09. Does she get nice colors or what? That dubbing is from Targus.....

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
MARK.....although I love them all....that FAN DANCE is the one for me. Definitely out of this world, drop dead, GORGEOUS. That one is absolutely one of your all time best flies right there, in my opinion. (if not the best one!!)
Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Now that I think of it, didn't you say you wanted to GIVE ME A FLY??? Just kiddin. That is too good of a fly to give to anyone. The colors, the flow, the outrageous statement you made here, is just mind boggling. Mark, I think it is quite possibly the best fly you ever tied.
