Re: Hot Butts and Flymphs
Boy that sure brings back nice memories........we got dressed just to the right outta the pic, in a nice spot over by the fly shop. Walked down to where we could cross over the Northfork, just outta the pic to the left. Then we walked up to bout the bottom of that S curve and fished all the way back to the junction, and then on down stream bout the same distance or more, to the right outta the pic, beyond where we had got dressed.
You are right........there are lots of fish there. And they were comming up to a degree, sometime splashing clear of the water a foot or more. Chasing Caddis i presumme. We were there on a Fri./Sat./& Sun. i must admit, i spent as much time in the fly shop/bar.....buying books & materials, eating and watching football (both college & Pro), as i did fishing. They have a great brunch there on Sun. from 11 a.m. til 2 p.m. Pleasure Park ROCKS, and so does you fly. Oh, and the wading is pretty easy.
p.s. Wayne.....you ever try that Mexican resturant in Delta? It's not bad.......we first found it in '09 the night before we went to the Open House gig at Whiting.

A thoroughly enjoyable post, Wayne, and a fly pattern that just begs to be copied for use in this part of the country. Please let us know how your verions of Dougsden's fly work out there, OK?

Re: Hot Butts and Flymphs
I woke up early this morning. Too early. I made a pot coffee, loaded the truck, and I was still a good hour too early to leave. So for a half hour I browsed the internet, then decided to head to the Gunnison. Yep, I was WAYYY too early. I sat in the parking lot, sipped coffee, and listened to a sports show on the radio talking about Tim Tebow, and the demise of the Denver Broncos. I sat there maybe 45 minutes then got my gear on and strung up my 5wt.
Told you I was too early..
I crossed the North Fork in the dark. Dumb thing to do but I did it. I got to the first section I wanted to fish. It's nick named "The Rock". A buddy of mine named it. I dont know why because theres no big rocks. It is right where the Gunnison first touches the N. Fork on river right. It extends maybe 30 yards upstream, and normally holds lots of little Browns, and some Big Bows.
On my 2nd drift I nabbed a little Brown. The sun wasn't even close to being up but I fished anyway. The little Brown took the Blue Dun Flymph of Dougsdons
The next 5 fish took the little Blue Flymph....Let me tell you how I rigged my flies. My point fly was the Hot Butt PT (bead slid up the leader ahead of it). Off the bend of that was Dougsdans Blue Flymph. The dropper off the Blue Flymph was the Beastie of Dougsdons. Heres the only Bow of the trip. It took Dougsdons Beastie, and that was the only fish caught on that pattern.
I caught a Russian Olive on my back cast and had to cut my rig off to get the tangle out. I replaced the Hot Butt with a Muskrat then tyed the Blue Flymph and Beastie back on. As the sun got highter it became tougher to catch fish. I managed 3 more on the Muskrat and 2 more on the Blue Flymph, and I didnt get another on the Beastie. I virtually had the river to myself until 10:30 AM. Then a few fishermen started to show up. I did not manage one fish over 12 inches long. Strange as I normally catch a few Bows in the 18 to 22 inch range, and atleast one Brown that will push 20 inches. Not today. I managed to move some fish throwing Woolly Buggers, but only got one bump for my troubles.
So, totals for fish and the flys.
Hott Butt PT A big goose egg, 0 ( no, I am not giving this pattern up)
Dougsdons Blue Dun Flymph - 7 (good fly. I already knew I'd like it)
Beastie - 1 (when the fish want Olive this pattern will kick butt)
Streamers 0
Good day. I want some big toads, but caught enough fish to make me happy
Where I cross the North Fork of the Gunnison back to my truck.
Ready to head home, and pick up my work truck from getting an oil change the day before.
I hope you all enjoy this post. I enjoy sharing my neighborhood with you.

Excellent trip report... (FWIW, I was browsing through the NPS literature on the Black Canyon last night: I could live without "exposure" and poison ivy, but anyplace called "SOB Draw" is a must-do to my way of thinking.)

Re: Hot Butts and Flymphs
I got a little sad Mark. This was the first time since Spring that I had fished this spot. That and knowing I had a shot at fishing with you and Misa, and I let it fall through the cracks.
