Let's see............"Native American"..........."Birds"..............Native American Birds..............yeah, ok, i can live with that.

Ray, i have never got a full skin directly from a hunter...........but i have never aggressivly (after-all, these guys got guns ), pursued that. i have feathers everywhere......so many feathers...........so i generally just settle for whatever i can get and be thankfull. But, i have no doubts whatsoever, that if i really wanted or need full skins (of which i already have, but i didn't get them from hunters), i could get them. i'll remember to keep you posted if something turns up on that level. Arkansas is the DUCK huntin' capital of the U.S., along with Maryland, from what i understand..........

Thanks Mark for your insight into the process. Your answer perfectly answered what I asked. It doesn't really matter what it represents, the emotional response from the viewer will answer that. I simply wanted to know what YOU were thinking during the creation. The title was rather non-descript and vague in conveying your thought process. The emotion of the artist lends much more to the creation than just the viewing.

sometimes i really NAIL a name for a fly.............other times.................well. ..........thing is.....i don't usually (90 somethin' % of the time) name them before i tye them.................it's usually just an after thought..............or out of nessessity...........so i can more easily find it later on, or just so i don't have nothin' but a series of number under a pic..................i don't wanna name them first..............that would predjudice the process.
i just wanna "Listen" to what the bead (life in your face.....you know the rest), is telling me to do........you dig?

The name's not really all that important at the beginning of the piece. A creative name is usually about the emotion of the artist and should be made at the end of the artwork. And it usually helps sum up a thought process or emotion or description that aids the viewer in understanding. Intentionally vague is good but you better be prepared for all kinds of responses.

Sorta like when I get a new dog (never had the same breed twice, yet), folks will ask me what his/her name is when I first get them and I always have to say, They (the dog), hasn't told me yet.
Rascal got his name because he IS a rascal. His predecessor (A Chocolate Chesapeake Retriever), was Clancy, he was a Muldoon. Before and for awhile with him was Bailey, (Chocolate Lab Female), named for Bailey Quarters (WKRP in Cincinnati potraed by Jan Smithers), quiet unassuming yet better at her job than Lonnie Anderson's character (all window dressing no substance), or anyone else that worked there for that matter. and so on back into history...

Well, here's the one i told you (& specially Bill) i'd post that was tyed to go in the Sowbug collection for next March, that has a dyed Mallard collar. Actually there are two dyed Mallard feathers.....one is a greyish-purple (underbeath the), and the other is pretty much hot pink. i dyed the head purple. The feather in the rear is BEP.........i had named this fly Tri-Tag.....because of the red/gold/silver tag.....but then changed the name to, Three (red/gold/silver), Steps to Mars because of the bead. The palmered hackle in the body is rooster.

That is stunning, Mark! Great use of a really wild bead, and despite what you told me about handling mallard, I find it amazing that you get so much of it to behave in one place. Nice dye jobs as well, both the feathers and the head.

Thankx Bill.....i just sent you a PM reply with more info bout how i deal with Mallard. The eye on this fly is fly line backing. This particular backing is very soft, and quite wide.....makes nice eyes. i bought maybe a half dozen of these particular beads.....they were half price when the lady who use to own our local bead shop was goin' outta business. i've already broke one of them, trying to force it over some thread wraps. i also did another fly using another one already. OH! and don't worry..... the bead shop is being re-opened with a new owner.

Is that a donation fly? Someone will be very lucky to win that one. The bead is very special and the pink in the fly is so much more than pink. Usually I'm not a fan of pink, maybe it's the combination with the purple. The name is perfect, Mars the red planet. It could be the glass globe thing you always see at the science centre though. You know the one with the static electricity that looks like little lightning bolts inside and when you touch it your hair stands straight up? Or maybe something from Frankenstein. It's alive.... IT'S ALIVE....
