Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Thankx guys.....actually that bead is metal.....brass/copper...../somethin'. i gotta figure it "was," part of a necklace of some kind.....but who knows. i found it (if i remember right) in a pretty off the beatin' path sorta place.....the joint sold boots and saddles and lether stuff and hats and western wear, and the like. i'm always on the hunt for beads.........and you never know where you'll find cool stuff. Got some pretty nice ones the day before yesterday in Branson. There's a shop in Colorado i'm dyin' to get back to.....gotta wait til Sept. looks like.

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Ok, well see...........i'm gonna try another one. Dont be to weirded out by the name...........i just couldn't think of anything.
i did this fly bout a month ago.....a week or so before we went to N.Y. Don't remember how many Peacock feathers i used in the dressing.....
i'd say at least a dozen. The tag material is from Walmart if i remember right...........the sewing section........no wait. Actually i think it was
Joanne's somewhere.....we don't have a Joanne's here...........or a Michaels or a Hobby Lobby.........just a damn Walmart. Anyway, i think
the bead i used here was a gift from a friend, the wife of the couple from Texas who we always stay with, and who always stay here. Pretty wacky
fly, but big fun to tye.

The name is actually perfect. It has the same profile as a jelly fish and the same type of transparency. Very cool. I really love the colours from peacock.

Peacock in any form is beautiful, and I really like that tail arrangement. Nice tie!

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Tkx. guys.....lemme tell you, on the tag........in a case like this, and very often when i use something that is very thin.......i'll cut a piece and then tye in both ends, and wrap it double.......then, (depending) sometimes i'll wrap down and back (two paths), or up/down/ and back (three paths) so i don't always need to worry bout makin' perfect turns that over-lap just enough to hide any open spaces that may have been left in one direction. Everything is going to get covered well in the two or three path method. Although, you still need to be neat and careful, to avoid bulk or lumps. There are just so many beautiful materials for making tags, but very often they are very thin tinsels or threads. The Midge Thread from Montana Flies is one perfect example...........obviously being "Midge" thread, it is a VERY thin diameter..........so tye in a double strand and go. Or even perhaps a triple strand(s).....maybe even twisted. The point is, do whatever you gotta do to make "it happen."
As the master artistic tyer Paul Rossman said, all fly tying is, is problem solving...........and BOY is he right. But the more i tye, the more i want to embrace that. It's actually very rewarding to find solutions to those problems............even though it can be very frustrating at times. You feel good when you figure out ways to overcome........
as an example..........with the fly above.........i knew i had used enough feathers, but i still had to much room left for the head...........so rather than add more unessessary feathers.....i just did a dubbed head. Now a dubbed head will simply not work with just any fly.....but in this case it did.

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Mark - If you had added a couple strands of red floss, your would have had an Alexandria variation. I tye an Alexandria "killer-style", which is very similar (minus the bead).

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
i'm trying to think of/picture it.......sometimes i get the Alexandria and the Montreal confused unless they're in front of me........whatever......anyway, that title had nothing to do with the tyin' of the fly................that was completely second hand, and only became nessessary when i had to give it a name for my pics folder. A "name" only as opposed to a series of numbers, which is just to impersonal......... i am NEVER thinkin' of a name when i'm tyin' a fly. i'm just painting..........it's almost finger painting.......kinna like that guy in the day room in One Flew Over the CooCoo's Nest............who's totally content to sit there alllllllllll day/every day, just rippin' up newspaper.......... ..........."finger painting"..............how technical can that be????? rotfl.......
Hey, here's a Pop Quiz for ya'll.........(based on my opinion )..........i'll give some hooks to the first one of you, who can tell me, who the real hero in that book is.......................?
