As a tying illustration. This might be the easiest to understand when you trying to demonstrate the technigue of flattening the material for the body, tie to the bend and cord the material to create the rib and up to the eye. I know we've seen this done in a lot of different materials and with and without added dubbing. But this for me clarifies what you're doing with silk better than showing it with silk.
I know people can be pretty selective when it comes to personal preference of floss/flavor. You'd better hope the trout are not as selective or good luck with trial and error trying to figure out what each one's preference will be.

If you review the Orange Sniper, depicted below, you may notice the flattened ribbon wrapped to the bend also traps the tailing material. No thread/silk, beyond the thorax area, where the tail material is originally attached with a few wraps of thread.
