Vicki ~ That is a wonderful fly, plan or no plan. I get the feeling looking at the flies that Mark posts that much of this art form is improvisational -- a skeletal framework that is dependent on the primary materials available, with the "flesh" added as your imagination takes over. It is apparent that you have that rare and elusive talent that separates fly dressers from fly tyers in the same way jazz musicians differ from the majority of High School band members.
Mark ~ Same to you .

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Vicki, is this your first time venturing in to classic/decorative salmon flies? this is much better than what I see a lot of guys doing for a while. The head looks great, proportions, neatness, etc really works. Most importantly is the cohesive composition. This one works very nicely. You really need to tap into some of the forums for folks who love to talk about the mineutia of their techniques. This is fantastic. Congrats.

Vicki, Howdy;
Beautiful Fly.
I think that your proportions are pleasing to my eye.
I think that if it pleases YOU then that's about all that is important.
What if Dali or some of the other famous ones had listened to the critics.
What would be hangin' in the museums ... Paint by numbers ?
Harry Chapen (sp?), wrote and sang a song about the kid in elementry school who was being squashed by an art teacher that kept telling him that Trees HAD to be Green on top with brown trunks, the sky HAD to be blue ect., ect.,
Then he met a teacher that said it was ok for the grass to be purple, the sky orange....catch my drift ?
I choose teach #2 myself...

Ray..... i didn't see your reply to Vicki (and i), until now..... Btw, her fly is on a size 9 hook.....which, in a way, makes it even more impressive. And i agree with your assesment.

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Ah gee...thanks everyone
You can thank Mark for giving me a good firm kick in this direction. I haven't been tying for that long and am still trying to teach myself a lot of the techniques needed for different types of tying. I hadn't even tied a dry fly (except for elk wing caddis and usuals) until last fall and then Mark decided I needed some of his fancy hooks and there I was....in trouble! Now that swap season is over (I just can't say no to a swap!) I'm just really starting to get into tying just for the heck of it. I find I'm really starting to look at materials a lot differently ( my family thinks I'm strange) and starting to dig into some things that I had inadvertently picked up in grab bags and never thought I'd use. It really is a lot of fun. The other thing I like is I can start a fly, leave it, then come back to it after a while and see if I still want to go in the same direction or try something different. It doesn't have to be finished in one sitting. I never have been good at following patterns, they always have to have some improvisation so this style is perfect for me!
Oh Mark I really like the cork your latest fly is on. Where'd you find that?

Re: Artistic JazzFlies
Thankx kid.....your a real "card." ................rollin' rollin' rollin'............................... and actually that PAticular cork i got in Loveland, Colorado at the FFF International Conclave in '09. This guy was repping for Stonefly Wines, and he had a booth.........and at his booth, he had a huge basket of unused corks, and he came over to my table and saw that i was using corks for displayin' flies, and offered me some.....gave me bout 100 or so. "Split second timing, baby.....split second timing." i was just to well raised to refuse.
