Starling and Purple

I was recently reminded that this was a great little pattern. I used to fish these all the time, but they were overlooked in favor of some newer flies. Thought I'd give these old friends another go.
In both flies the hook is a Daiichi 1640 size 14, Hackle is starling flank feather, the silk is Pearsall's Gossamer Purple, lightly waxed. The fly in the clip has the hackle would with both sides of the feather while the one hanging from the eye of the other has one side of the starling stripped.

Very nice Ron, I like both but tend to like the fly with both sides of the hackle. This spring I’ve really dedicated myself to fishing flymphs and wet flies and I’ve been really impressed with my success which I owe to the fine folks here!

I like to tie some with a wire rib for weight to get down just sub surface in the riffles.

I usually use a poly leader or even a tip to get them into the riffles.

For one of my travel rods I made T-14 tips in 2, 5, 7 and 10' to adjust to different water conditions when only taking a floating line.

For one of my travel rods I made T-14 tips in 2, 5, 7 and 10' to adjust to different water conditions when only taking a floating line.

I find myself using a Skagit head and running line more and more, even with my single hand rods. Everything from a 6'6" 3 weight to a 12'6"5 weight. Tips or poly leaders of different sink rates are part of the game for me.
