Pheasant wings
Last night my neighbor brought over a pair of pheasant wings wondering if I could use them. I thanked him for them and they are attractive and even have some very beautiful small hackled feathers.
My question is, I have never heard or seen anyone use pheasant wings. Is there a good reason for that? Or are they useful?

Re: Pheasant wings
One use I know of is for a tenkara fly. The feather used is the alula (kenbane in Japanese).

Neat stuff. Had to look up alula on Wikipedia, learned they are a natural feat of flight engineering, creating turbulence over the wing to allow the bird to angle up its wings and swoop down while maintaining lift
Alula feathers helping this fish-catcher swing down and across for the kill...
A wonderful creature. But then I got fly brain and couldn't help myself...

In the aviation side of life they would be referred to as Forward wing Slats. chucklin'chugbug wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2023 1:58 pm Neat stuff. Classic fly brain there, chugbug!
I see them almost everyday and after 15 years, I'm still in awe when I watch them hunt.
absolutely amazing.

Re: Pheasant wings
pheasant wing quill feathers can be used on a number of ray bergman and ken sawada winged wet flies
Flytiers sure have a way at making things difficult
Re: Pheasant wings
You can subitute hen pheasant feathers for many soft hackle patterns.
