Mystery Feather Soft Hackle
Hi All,
Greetings from Nikko, Japan. This month I am staying in the northern part of Japan and Spring has sprung. While walking through the woods, I found a feather and decided to tie a soft hackle fly with the mystery feather.
Hook: Dohiku #16
Thread: GSP 20 Denier
Body: Yellow Silk from Japanese Dollar Store - 2 strands (thread made up of 5 strands)
Counter Rib: 2 barbs from mystery feather
Wire: XS Lagartun gold wire. Did not counter rib over the mystery feather. I felt it looked better if it went in the same direction
Hackle: Partridge
I plan on fishing for the first time in Japan late next week.

Beautifull Fly!!
Re: Mystery Feather Soft Hackle
Otto I hope the catching is as good as the fishing!

Man, that is a beautiful tie. Love the less than subtle barring on the feather. Thanks for sharing it.

This is the closest I got to a fish 3 weeks ago in Nikko.
I did manage to catch Cherry blossoms though it was slightly past peak.

Newriverspey,
I hope that you get to take more walks around the woods and gather many more mystery feathers and (if you are allowed to do so) bring them home to all your MFSH fans here on this side of the ring of fire!
Your pattern is absolutely spectacular! Extremely well done as usual! I too hope that you have great success with this pattern in your adventures around northern Japan! Please take lots of pictures!

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.

Dale,
The picture and "the water under the bridge" are superb! I like its content and composition! Very well done friend! Japan is a beautiful country!

Hi Dougsden,
I have done a lot of walking in Nikko. It is an amazing place and the mountain streams are beautiful and crystal clear. I am probably not going to bring any feathers back due to customs and legal issues but it would be nice if I could. The under furs of bear, deer, and squirrel are used quite a bit as dubbing and nothing goes to waste.
Take care,
Otto

Hi Dale,
I was just at that bridge and visited the shrine that is just to the right of the bridge. Your picture captures the beauty of the area. Thanks for posting and sorry you could not go fishing.

Thanks, Doug. I believe that the quality of this picture is more due to the subject than the photographer.
