March Brown Flymph (swap flies)
March Brown Flymph
Hook - Mustad 3906/Size 10
Thread - Kimono Silk (No. 317/"Orenji")
Hackle - Collen's Hen Saddle (Furnace)
Rib (*) - Belding-Hemingway Co. Silk Button Hole Twist (Rich Chocolate Brown/No. 238)
Tail - 3 Strands of Hungarian Partridge Tail Feather Fibers (Natural Mottled)
Body - Jay Fair Seal Sub (Tan)
Thorax - Jay Fair Seal Sub (Cinnamon Brown)
Head - Tying Silk sealed with Sally Hansen's Hard-as-Nails clear nail polish
(*) - rib is wrapped in opposite direction as the body (counter-ribbing helps prevent rib from sinking too deeply in to the body dubbing)
Materials are listed in the order they are attached to the hook.
I spent a lot of time this morning looking thru my materials, trying to come up with a combination that came close to an Art Flick's March Brown (but with in a "flymph" style). After looking thru my hackle, I settled on a furnace Collin's Hen saddle. The hackle has a lovely mottle brown, and with a nice soft tapered hackle.
For dubbing I selected Jay Fair's Seal Sub dubbing. Wonderfully translucent fibers.
For tailing I settled on natural Hungarian Partridge tail fibers.
Bill Shuck's Tying Wax to treat the silk thread and help secure the early wraps of thread (excellent grip).
Prepared hackle (one side stripped off) - ready for tying in at the head of the fly

Simply magnificent, and I love the patterning in the hen!

Holy smokes Ray!
Beautiful patterns and a terrific SBS as always! That hen is fantastic and it did a real number on each of your patterns as the crowning glory on each! I think you should do this for a living!
Very pleased to share in your glory! Thanks for all you do! This will be another fantastic swap for sure!

Fish when you can, not when you should! Anything short of this is just a disaster.

Beautiful fly and excellent sbs, thanks sharing! For a hack like me the sbs are so helpful.
Thanks again, Mike.
Thanks again, Mike.

beauties Ray.. I have that same hen saddle and use it a lot. I've got to learn how to reduce the size of the photos taken by my crappy old cell phone to get them in focus after I've cropped the to fit the forum.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then 1000 X 20 is how many books? Well done as always, Thanks Ray!
