Okay, so how many bad 80's musical references can we find? I'm thinking Ian Drury and the Blockheads might turn up... (hit me with your rhythm stick).

"Spiders" I just whip finish. Maybe it's just my particular recipe but wax gets sticky from the friction of the whip finish and will grab and snap my silk at the worst possible moment. Plus i was taught a super tiny 3 turn head was the mark of a well tied fly. On bigger wet flies I'm guilty of using thin uv resin but I'm told by production tyers that's a bad idea. I don't know but it looks great and I've never had a problem with it. I would likely use head cement on nymphs and such more but I can't find anything I'm happy with and I'm tired of buying new stuff. I want thin, penetrating, glassy head cement. I don't want new water based crap....I want the stuff from the 80s that gives people In California and Rhode Island cancer!

I believe it was Datus Proper who advocated using artist’s varnish.
A 2.5 oz bottle of Windsor Newton costs about $6-7 at Hobby Lobby or $9-10 at an art supply shop.

I usually finish with Veniard's Cellire, but for spiders with well waxed thread, I don't bother.

Have you tried Hard as Hull Penetrating ? Comes in a brown bottle. The first coat sinks into the thread and then let it dry a bit. Then add a second coat and it looks like UV resin.

No I haven't tried that one yet but it looks like the real deal. I'll try it!
