Old Master

Soft Hackle

Hook 1 (= size 14)
Wings - Hackled with a feather from the inside of a Woodcock’s wing
Body - Ash-colored silk, wrapped over with Heron’s herl

* Certain species of Heron is an illegal tying material in the USA. A substitute is gray goose.

Federal Register :: General Provisions; Revised List of Migratory Birds

I'm not into tying with silk threads or tying for museums. I use thread I have on hand.

Norm,
An Old Master from the "Old Master" himself! A sincere compliment my friend! A job well done as always! What a beautiful pattern!

What a lovely dressing. That goose herl couldn't be more perfect. This is a fish catcher. Don't know why I stopped using it. It's one of the first that Donald Nicholson got me to tie, also using goose herl. Mine never looked that good.

I tied this version with Blue-eared pheasant herl as a substitute for Heron. Boy is it fragile. It's tied over Pearsall's Gossamer (Ash / #10). I like this fly lightly hackled, so I removed the fibers from 1 side of the feather.
