The 477 is made of 85% wool and 15% nylon as mentioned on the card. Under magnification the wool looks natural or pale gray and the nylon is something like claret.

T12,

I have a whole skein of one of the 477 substitutes, and would be happy to send you some to play with. Just send me a PM with your mailing address, and I will drop some in the mail.

Somewhere on the forum is an long post describing various substitutes for 477. I think William Anderson posted the string several years back. Do a search on Chadwicks and you should find it.

I had a card of the 477, but used it all up. Now I tye with the substitutes (Jaimeson's Spindrift, Berroco, etc.).

Interesting reading on what the Sawyers used when 477 was NLA.

And no the fish can't tell the difference in a lot of cases. You can tie the same fly in a variety of different colors and have great success. I still want a really close 477 substitute tho

Thanks! Been looking for this and could never find any. Just ordered some!

Just got my order. It is Berroco Steel Cut Oats, but not UAF1214, it's UAW6214. I didn't notice that til I got it. I guess I was hoping I hit the jackpot. Not seeing any pink in it, just tan. Not sure how this compares to UAF1214. I do have some Jaimeson's Spindrift 290 Oyster which is definitely more pink.

I am glad the widow was able to secure a secondary source of material to make money.

It struck me funny.
