Re: Carey Special
That pattern has caught a lot of fish for me. Nicely done.

Re: Carey Special
Lately I have been tying them with hackle that isca touch longer. My most productive fly in still water.

Re: Carey Special
Do you lengthen the tail fibers as well? I've had really good luck with longer pheasant tail fibers for the tail, and a hackle wrapped at the back. (variation of the CS pattern)

Re: Carey Special
Not really. I tie the hackle tips even with the tail.

Re: Carey Special
Another favorite fly of mine. They are so fun to tie and so versatile. In 14-10 they make a great dragon/damsel fly nymph. I tie them in about a 6 or 4 for farm pond bass. Sometimes I'll tie them with jungle cock eyes or even omit the hackle tail and tie in a red wool tag. Here is my rendition. I hope this thread blows up!

Re: Carey Special
I tied some with maroon chenille and black pheasant rump, which did not do much. I bought some ostrich herl to try.
Has anyone used the original groundhog body?

Re: Carey Special
Marvelous set of variations. Every one of them looks highly effective! Kudos…I’d borrow flies from you both, any day…
